SAFER CHATBOTS
CHATBOT IMPLEMENTATION GUIDE & VIDEO
IDENTITY & BRANDING STRATEGY
Safer Chatbots is an initiative by UNICEF that aims to make using automated chat services a more welcoming, safe, and positive experience for those in need. Turning chatbots from cold, unfeeling machines into warm, comforting, and empathetic assistance was the main goal of this brief, both in practice and in presentation.
Safer Chatbot’s identity required a soft edge, and a trusting, empathetic look and feel. I chose rounded typefaces, which simultaneously have a digital feel to them. The colour palette is bright and friendly, whilst remaining gender neutral and inclusive, an important finding in the project’s research.
The logo icons use a combination of familiar symbols merged into a new icon with a clear meaning. For example, the use of a chat bubble, combined with a heart, signifies a loving space to hold dialogue or a safe chat. The familiar elements of a robot with buttons and an antenna etc, again combined with a chat bubble, clearly depict a chatbot.
The chatbot, who we named CB (Cibi) has a friendly face and is there to make the vulnerable user feel comfortable discussing sensitive topics. Cibi is also present throughout the Implementation Guide, to guide the reader through the necessary steps.

Cibi had to have vivid expressions, to help communicate the appropriate reaction to the youth in need, making sure to show the
appropriate amount of concern.
Cibi also has to depict an expression for detection of a keyword, in order for the bot to then provide the correct response and information to the user.
Safer Chatbots offers three different mechanisms to help increase the safety of chatbots, depending on its level of sophistication and the resources available. This is shown through Cibi going through three different stages of development.

The Implementation Guide consists of a detailed breakdown of how to make your chatbot safer, with steps and processes, and a 2-pager summary.
The guide is legible on mobile and tablet, with charming visuals and a digestible layout. The steps are clear and communicated through relevant imagery and attractive graphic elements.
In collaboration with an illustrator and animator, we created a video that summarises the importance of Safer Chatbots in the world and the implementation guide's functionality.
